Statement from the second national symposium on drugs and drug control policy in Nigeria
The 2015 Symposium focused on different aspects of the drug problem in Nigeria and was organized around several topical areas using different formats as follows:
1. Panel Discussions
- Legal and policy framework for drug control in Nigeria
- Towards the United Nations Special Session on the World Drug Problem (UNGASS 2016)
- Drug demand reduction and alcohol policy: the missing link in substance abuse control in Nigeria
- Organized crime networks in the ECOWAS region
- Harm to others from drinking: WHO/Thai-Health project in Nigeria
2. Capacity Building
- Community based treatment and rehabilitation
- Early identification and brief interventions
- Writing a winning grant application
3. CSO Special Sessions
- Developing and sustaining a CSO network in Nigeria
- Enhancing cooperation between CSOs and Law Enforcement Agencies
4. Poster Presentations
- Presenting drug related research
- Showcasing your organization
Keynote speakers and other resource persons were invited to handle these topics in plenary sessions and in small group discussion sessions. There was also the opportunity for individual presentations on any topic related to substance use in Nigeria, and NGOs were given the opportunity to showcase the work of their organizations in poster sessions. The outcome of the symposium was the drafting of a statement calling for drug policy reform, available below.
